Away in a far, far world two of my favorite people call home… Just kidding. It’s actually Seattle. And the reason it feels so far, far away is precisely two of my favorite people live there. If I could keep these two people proximal to me at all times, my life would be pretty ideal. You know those friends… the ones whose conversation makes you feel alive, talented fencers of conversationalists who pull your mind to greater heights. Milind and Sarah are two of my closest friends and I miss them. So when I got a collective email from them, as always, I put aside my life ready to devour it and feel invigorated.
They are my high.
In this email sat the article of all articles… Google X and the Science of Radical Creativity (https://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2017/11/x-google-moonshot-factory/540648/).
And then, mere sentences in, I got so overwhelmed.
The article shares that there is a secretive Silicon Valley lab, owned by Google, that is trying to “resurrect the lost art of invention,” and solve impossible problems by trying supposedly impossible solutions.
That exists!!!
I mean this article is PERFECTION. It’s about a group of essentially superheroes who are out to revolutionize the world and in the most explosive way possible. As the article states, “X is perhaps the only enterprise on the planet where regular investigation into the absurd is not just permitted but encouraged, and even required.”
Take the first sentence itself:
"A snake-robot designer, a balloon scientist, a liquid-crystals technologist, an extradimensional physicist, a psychology geek, an electronic-materials wrangler, and a journalist walk into a room. The journalist turns to the assembled crowd and asks: Should we build houses on the ocean?"
And it’s a real story! Even the name of the company, X, is so fitting, so nerd-tastically exhilarating.
“The name X was chosen as a purposeful placeholder—as in, We’ll solve for that later.” As in, we are so busy creating the most epic science experiments of the world, we do not have time to name the company. #nerdingout
I tried to print it so I could love on the article, mark it up and slobber over every perfectly crafted sentence. Adobe counted 26 pages. I chose not to kill those trees. So, I lovingly tucked it away into my Unread Inbox (shame, shame) and then life happened. And every time I would touch it, I would fall in love, feel my heart get squishy from all the KNOWLEDGE it had in it and then hit pause again.
I LOVED this article. My mind went INSANE with this article. This article made me so excited… excited to learn that this company actually exists, that people actually show up to work every day to solve the world’s problems with the most far-fetched solutions on the planet which actually are backed by science (ie: using balloons to deliver the internet to underdeveloped parts of the world). And I was equally excited thinking about what would happen if I actually spread this unencumbered enthusiasm to weave Moonshot principles into the daily lives of others.
What this sparked was conversation after conversation that I wanted to share…. a waterfall of ideas I wanted to spread. So I came to my favorite platform for spreading ideas, IgniteDDS, and am launching a blog series based off of my personal Moonshots, helping you live your greatest life possible. SO stay tuned, because starting next week, we are diving in full force and discussing what happens when you attempt Moonshots for your life?
And what happens when those Moonshots become a reality?
(P.S. Thank you Milind and Sarah for adding so much light into my life).
They are my high.
